IRS Provides Relief for Helene: Various Deadlines Postponed to May 1, 2025
The IRS has announced tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by Hurricane Helene. This relief extends to the entire states of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, as well as parts of Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Key Points:
- Extended Deadlines: Affected taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. This applies to various returns and payments originally due in late 2024 and 2025.
- Eligibility: The relief applies to any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for individual assistance. This includes all of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, along with 41 counties in Florida, eight counties in Tennessee, and six counties and one city in Virginia.
- Automatic Relief: Taxpayers in the covered disaster areas automatically receive filing and penalty relief. No action is needed to obtain this relief.
- Additional Assistance: The IRS will work with any taxpayer who lives outside the disaster area but whose records necessary to meet a deadline occurring during the postponement period are located in the affected area.
