March 25, 2020 Tax Update

March 23, 2020 | Symphona

On March 25, 2020, Governor Kemp and the Georgia Department of Revenue provided additional guidance related to the filing of 2019 income tax returns.  In following the lead of the Internal Revenue Service, Georgia is automatically extending the 2019 income tax filing and payment deadline to July 15, 2020.  Income tax payments for 2019 tax returns made after April 15th and before July 15th will not be subject to late payment penalties or interest.  Estimated tax payments for the 2020 tax year due on April 15, 2020 have also been extended to July 15, 2020.  While the state income tax returns have been extended, this does not apply to the filing, payment or deposit of other state returns such as withholding and sales taxes.

In addition to the income tax extension, vehicle registrations that expire between March 16, 2020 and May 14, 2020 have been extended through May 15, 2020.  A complete copy of the press release can be found at:  https://dor.georgia.gov/press-releases/2020-03-25/georgia-income-tax-and-tag-renewal-deadlines-extended
